An exhibition of fabric art works produced by FLAX, responding to Wordsworth’s Duddon Sonnets.
Commissioned by Wordsworth Grasmere to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of William Wordsworth’s Duddon Sonnets, these multimedia art works were first exhibited at Dove Cottage in 2021 and have been re-hung with additional works.
FLAX is a group of textile and mixed media artists, plus a creative writer, whose work showcases individual skills, techniques and expressions.
“This exhibition has allowed us to interpret the distinctive, unique atmosphere that Wordsworth so well defined about this wild, remote valley with its ancient history of habitation, folk tales and beliefs in his River Duddon Sonnets.”
The ancient Holy Trinity Church, Millom was well-known to Wordsworth. The atmospheric setting by the Duddon Estuary is the perfect location to enjoy this unique exhibition.
Take a self-guided tour of Holy Trinity with the full colour guide book detailing the history of the Church, its relationship with Millom Castle and the Huddlestons, Lords of Millom.

“FLAX”
South Cumbrian Textile and Mixed Media Artists
“Flax” is a group of textile and mixed media artists, plus a creative writer, whose work showcases individual skills, techniques and expressions.
Traditionally grown in South Lakeland, flax was processed and woven into linen. Thus the name is an appropriate reflection of the textile base which informs the artists’ work.
This exhibition has allowed us to interpret the distinctive unique atmosphere that Wordsworth so well defined about this wild, remote valley with its ancient history of habitation, folk tales and beliefs in his River Duddon Sonnets.
Let the artwork tell its story.

This piece is an imagined dried up Duddon estuary. It came about from of a desire to consider how the landscape is changing; how it has already changed; and how it might change in the future. With mass deforestation, flooding and desertification sweeping the world, our horizons are not as permanent as they feel. It's the feeling we get when we visit ancient monuments, seeing their desolation and their vibrant past crumbling.
First presented as part of the “Unpublished Tour” series of events, Millom, Summer 2021. The work, in part, is inspired by William Wordsworth's 'The River Duddon”. See -
